With or Without

Anyone can look good on Photoshop.

Doves had an awareness campaign in 2006 with the aim at making young women aware about the truth of  images that are portrayed in Media. The main message of this campaign was to show young women what is done to the images, in terms of the twiggs and changes that are done on Billboard models using photoshop. Wikipedia defines Photoshop as a graphic editing programme that edits, organise, restore, crop and slice images, pictures, drawings, and logo's. Ideally this changes how things actually look, I wanted to specifically focus on how we view beauty.

What is beauty?

Beauty is the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, this is how Dictionary.com defines beauty.

However, how do you define beauty, my Media Lecturer shared the Doves video in class with us,  I went and looked at it again. The video made me question why is it that we know that most images and people on television, magazines and Billboards are photoshoped but we still continue aspiring be to like that people portrayed in these mediums? The definition says that beauty is a quality in a person that gives intense pleasure or deep satifaction to the mind. Does this mean that we find satisfaction in the images we see in these mediums, is that why we continue to aspire to be like the portrayed models, and this is what leads to the satisfaction of our beauty. I was told that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I have learned to love and appreciate myself they way I am, even though I wish to like a bit different or should i say a little prettier. It doesn't mean you should change yourself into someone who is not real, even if the person in the magazine know that that's not how they really look.

Beauty should be seen as something that you live in content with, and let letting someone else define haw you should look. Love, live and admire your beauty.

  1. Beauty comes from within.

i would rather be beautiful inside than out, at the end it all has to do with Self confidence.

  2. Hey i happen to think or rather would like to think that what we feel inside is what we project out to the world and photoshop or not the way we feel and embrace our inner selves is how. We perceive what beauty is to us. For us to finally fill the universal void of beauty we must seek to be fulfilled and content then we just might find beauty.

  3. @4TUNE being self confident is only the first step to being content with yourself, and the most important step as wel, learning to appreciate your inner and outer beauty is just as important and many times we over look these factors.

@Supreme thanks alot for that view on beauty and beauty trully does come from within and is a important factor to embrace as wel, be happy with yourself and how you look and the rest will follow.

  4. Media can actually play a big role in influencing or changing our perceptions of things. From my point of view about the Dove campaign, the company actually did a good work with the awareness, however media will always ensure that it achieve its goal of manipulating people.

  5. Media's main reason for twigging and changing these images is to make money by making things look more appealing. They doing this for finicial purposes and has distored alot of peoples perception in the process.

  6. media is really influencing us on how we see things and ourself, it manipulates us so i think we should be torturing ourselfs that we want to look like the people on magazine because that not how they look like beauty is what we feel inside

    1. But why is it that we continue to fall prey to the manipulations, and is more evident that more people are caught in the hype. how long before every one realises that it starts within?
